Provins is an ancient fortified town, crowning a prominent hill, that
can be seen for miles around. In the Middle Ages it was the most
prosperous town in France after Paris and Rouen, and celebrated all over
Europe for its trade fairs. It is on two levels, the upper town
occupying the site of a Gallo-Roman fortress camp and still partly
surrounded by well-preserved 12th century ramparts with built-in towers.
Provins is renowned for a paricular red rose, reputed to have been brought back from one of the Crusades, and grown here ever since. Visitors from Lancashire may not know that this was the origin of the red rose of the house of Lancaster, introduced into the arms by Edmund Lancaster, brother of the King of England and, by marriage, the Count of Provins in the second half of he 13th century. |
