We set sail on the P & O Ferry "Pride of Portsmouth" to Le Harve on Wednesday, 18th October 2000. Here we are waiting to board. |

The Continental Ferry Port is at the north end of Portsmouth Harbour.
The passage to the English Channel is always interesting as one travels
past the Navy Dockyard and the Old Town.
I attended Portsmouth Polytechnic in the 1960s and got to know this area quite well. In those days there were hundreds of dockyard workers who traveled to work by bicycle. HMS Victory can be seen in 008. 009 is a fascinating spot at which to watch the comings and goings. Of the several pubs Ye Old Still and West remains my favourite. As one explore the Round Tower (010) one gets a great sense of history when the "senior service" was at its peak. Clarence Pier with its funfair (013) was looking rather bleak on this dull Autumn day. I well remember many happy visits made as a child to this, the western end of Southsea.

Alan Collins, one of the Rally Officers, provided marvellous directions. One of the landmarks to look out for as we neared the caravan part to watch out for was these "nodding donkeys". |
