The ancient feast of of Pentecost came 50 days after the beginning of Passover and was the Jewish Harvest Festival when a barley sheaf was offered in thanksgiving to God. On the Day of Pentecost, some six weeks after the first Easter Day when Jesus rose from the dead, the Spirit of God was outpoured on the twelve disciples of Jesus as they waited together I an upper room in Jerusalem. That day signaled the birthday of the Christian church, Those first Christians experienced a new joy and confidence, new enthusiasm and a new unity. |
From then on the Good News of God's saving love spread steadily and inexorably across western Europe and eventually throughout the world. This day in Newbury, as in many other parts of Britain, the sixteen churches come together to celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit to the church. We need afresh that baptism, that filling, that empowering, so that we will be united together in love to serve our community and the wider world.

On Sunday, 28th November 1999 the wretched Sunday Market even extended to Bartholomew Street outside St. Nicolas Church. |
What annoyed me on my way to church was the butcher's lorry parked on the payment restricting its width and the Biffa bin irreverently positioned against the War Memorial. Only two weeks earlier Newbury was remembering its dead - there were still wreaths and poppies on the memorial! Regarding the pavement: I know the street is pedestrianised and, in theory, it should be safe to walk there. But if you are pushing a wheel-chair and intending to attend church there is still a relatively high, upright (as opposed to sloping) curb to mount. |
Talking about obstrcuting the pavement (this picture was taken on the same day, 28th November 1999 and despite the presence of numerous vehicles, during the pedestrianisation period) is obstructed by a builder's tower scaffolding. There were no notices advising of the obstruction requesting wheelchair users to go an alternative way - inconsiderate to say the least. When will society acknowledge that wheelchair users are just as entitled to free, unhindered access as everyone else? |
