The Cromwell Singers of Newbury
Who We Are
Updated: 06 February 2011
FORMED in 1976 by Stanley Kirk to perform a single concert, The Cromwell Singers have become well established in the choral life of the Newbury area. Originally rehearsals took place in the URC Hall in Cromwell Place. When the choir was looking for a name "The Cromwell Singers" seemed very appropriate.
The Cromwells decided to continue after their inception and grew to their present size of approximately 50 voices, musical direction given firstly by Stan, followed by Steven Bowey, Nic Cope, David Wilcox, and presently Rosemary Evans, organist and musical director St Mary's Church, Kintbury.
Who's Who (2007 - 2011)
ROSEMARY EVANS, FTCL, GTCL, ARCO
ROSEMARY EVANS first studied the organ with Clifford Harker, Organist and Master of the Choristers at Bristol Cathedral, whilst in her Upper VI year at The Red Maids' School, having studied the piano since a very early age. Her organ lessons continued with Dr. Walter Hillsman and Dr. Harry Gabb at Trinity College of Music, London, as part of her degree course. She gained the Fellowship Diploma in organ playing and was awarded the Cardnell Organ Prize during her time at Trinity. She also gained the Licentiate Diploma in piano playing whilst studying with Jacob Kaletsky. She later continued her organ studies with Walter Hillsman in Oxford, becoming an Associate of the Royal College of Organists. After leaving Trinity, she gained the Post-Graduate Certificate in Education at Reading University School of Education.
Rosemary has been the accompanist to Newbury Choral Society since April 1995 and she has worked under three conductors, Robert Barsby, Janet Lincé and Leo Hussain. She is the organist and choir director at St. Mary's Church, Kintbury; in April 2006 she directed two performances of “The Crucifixion” by Stainer, performed by an augmented church choir. She plays the piano for choral workshops and performs as an accompanist. She teaches piano, organ and music theory, both privately and at St. Mary's School, Calne and St. Margaret’s School, Calne. Rosemary was for many years a full-time music teacher at Downe House School, where she was the accompanist to the senior choir, directed by Trevor Selby; annual tours included venues in Europe and the USA. Two compact discs were made during this time. At Downe House, she also enjoyed accompanying singers in concerts and for their grade examinations, and teaching GCSE and A level aural training. When she first moved to Newbury, she was Assistant Organist at St. Nicolas, so this is an instrument that she knows well.
& Tenor Rep:
Immediate Past Chairman
Hello! I’m Jim Turner. I am one of the three surviving members of the Cromwells since its foundation in 1976. I was elected Chairman in September 1999, and re-elected in September 2000. I started off singing bass, but switched to tenor a few years ago when there was a shortage in that section of the choir. I am currently back to singing bass due to a shortage in that section. I sing tenor in the Newbury Methodist Church Choir.
